epa09710388 Lucie Brichot, 75, makes
Gilles de Binche clogs in her small shop despite the
cancellation of the Binche Carnival, in Binche, Belgium, 26
January 2022. Lucie Brichot has been making Gilles de Binche
clogs by hand since 1966. She was 19 when she took over the
family business run by her grandparents since the start of the
First World War. For Lucie, making Gilles de Binche clogs is
more than just a job. For her it represents all her life and her
pride, that's why she tirelessly continues to manufacture them.
Since its existence around 1394, the carnival has been canceled
three times, the first during the Second World War and the other
two times due to the health crisis linked to COVID-19 in 2021
and 2022. The Carnival of Binche is a popular historical
cultural event that was named a Masterpiece of the Oral and
Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003. EPA/STEPHANIE
