Three films dedicated to the
border, its history and the inhabitants of the cross-border
territory will be screened next Tuesday, July 18, at 9 p.m. at
Transalpina/Trg Evrope Square. For many years now, Kinoatelje
has been setting up a big screen in this symbolic place of
contact between the two Gorities for an evening dedicated to
cinema under the stars and to promote the square as one of the
cornerstones for the culture of the two cities.
The program will feature the documentary We Don't Want White
Bread (2009) by director Jasna Hribernik, one of the best-known
exponents of contemporary Slovenian art, which through
testimonies and historical reflections describes the encounter
between consumerism and democracy, when coca-cola, chewing gum
and jazz conquered the Soča Valley. A time of celebration but
also of strong demonstrations that demanded annexation to
Yugoslavia. The evening's guest will be filmmaker Jasna
Hribernik.
Before the film, the short film Where is the Iron
Curtain?(1961) by legendary Slovenian director Mako Sajko, which
depicts in a very humorous and light-hearted way life as well as
friendly neighborly relations on the Yugoslav-Italian border in
1960, when the two countries were almost undisturbed in the
exchange of goods. Enriching the program will be the animated
short War of Words or Respectful Silence? (2020) by young
director Leo Černic. The work was produced by Kinoatelje as part
of the educational project of the same name developed in the
2020/2021 school year.In this course, students got to learn how
turbulent the past of the cross-border territory between
Slovenia and Italy was. In 2020, Černic received the award for
artistic design given by the Association of Slovenian Animated
Film - DSAF.
The event is part of the GO! 2025 European Capital of Culture
program and the multi-year project EAST/WEST: The Frontier in
Cinema and History, which explores through the multifaceted
perspective of moving images what life was like on the
Italian-Slovenian border.
Films will be screened in original language with Slovenian and
Italian subtitles.
In case of bad weather, the screening will be held at Kinemax in
Gorizia.
