Contrary to initial
predictions, the leftist nationalist Social Democrats of former
pro-Russian premier Robert Fico have won parliamentary elections
in Slovakia.
Slovakia's early elections were won by the Smer-Sd party of
former premier Robert Fico.
At the count nearly 100% received 23% of the vote, Slovak TV Ta3
reported. Voter turnout was nearly 67.4 percent, the highest
since 2002. The Progressive Slovakia formation came in second
with 18 percent and did not confirm exit polls, which gave it as
the winner. Peter Pellegrini, whose Voice-Sd came third with 15
percent has already congratulated Fico and offered himself as a
partner for coalition talks. "It will be logical for Fico to be
the first to turn to our party to negotiate a government,"
Pellegrini told reporters. Seven parties are entering
Parliament, including the Slovak National Party (Sns).
The former premier attacked the EU and NATO and opposed any
further military aid to Kiev.
