Police action against Liguria Governor
Giovanni Toti could have been taken "much sooner", Deputy
Premier, Foreign Minister and centre right Forza Italia (FI)
leader Antonio Tajani said Wednesday saying he shared Justice
Minister Carlo Nordio's doubts about the timing of the former FI
member's arrest in a graft probe.
On Tuesday Nordio voiced "perplexity" about the timing of the
arrest while stressing he did not believe in 'clockwork
justice'.
"Minister Nordio has a role and can say what he thinks," said
Tajani. "He is right to do so and I agree with his words."
Tajani said the Toti case "is a judicial affair that dates back
to events of very many years ago, and perhaps they (prosecutors
and police) could have intervened two months ago, the day after
the elections."
Tajani dismissed calls from the centre-left opposition
Democratic Party (PD) for Toti to resign saying that his case
was not like that of PD Pugia Governor Michele Emiliano, whom
the centre right has urged to quit after mafia probes, because
"Emiliano said on two occasions that he had gone to the home of
a mafia boss's sister".
