(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 29 - Friday was a special day at the Ryder
Cup, Matt Fitzpatrick said after partnering Rory McIlroy to the
only foruball win of the day, 5-3 against Collin Morikawa and
Xander Schauffele, to leave Europe leading 6.5-1.5 after
sweeping the morning's foursomes 4-0 at Italy's first edition of
the event at the Marco Simone course in Rome.
The US started the day favourites to retain the trophy in golf's
epic team clash after mauling Europe 19-9 at Whistling Straits
two years ago, but they haven't won in Europe for 30 years.
"It was a special day, the energy we felt coming from the course
and the fans was incredible, and that's the beauty of plating at
home," said England's Fitzpatrick.
"I get on great with all the lads in the team, we give each
other advice, and having at your side a legend like McIlroy is a
huge confidence boost.
"Everything was perfect today. The design of the Marco Simone is
spectacular, you can make great shots, but above all the
reception from the fans was lovely, it was like one reserved for
footballers." (ANSA).
