(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 29 - Europe whitewashed the United States
4-0 in the opening foursomes session of the 44th Ryder Cup on
Friday at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club at Guidonia, near
Rome.
It is the first time in Ryder Cup history that Europe have won a
morning session 4-0.
Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton beat world number one Scottie
Scheffler and Sam Burns in the first match, finishing four up
with three holes to spare.
Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg matched that feat in the second
contest against Max Homa and Brian Harman.
Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka beat Rickie Fowler and Collin
Morikawa two and one, as did Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood
against Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.
The US went into golf's epic team battle as hot favourites after
thrashing Europe 19-9 at Whistling Straits two years ago.
