COVID-19: over one million cases in Central-Eastern Europe

Number of positive and deaths increasing in 'New Europe'

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 22 SET - Countries in Central- and Eastern Europe recorded more than one million coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic in the week ending September 20, according to data from the WHO weekly epidemiological update, published Monday evening.

A total of 89060 new COVID-19 cases (+26.3% compared to last week) and 1295 new deaths (+21.2% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) in the week ending September 20, bringing the cumulative total of cases to 1040033 and of deaths to 28511.

Ukraine, Czechia and Hungary recorded again a significant increase in new cases of infection last week. The authorities in the Ukraine reported 21343 new cases in the last 7 days compared to 18441 of a week earlier, Czechia 12905 compared to 7649, Hungary 6165 against 3933.

According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Ukraine (18441), Czechia (12905), Germany (11897), Romania (9164) and Hungary (6165).

The highest number of cumulative cases of COVID-19 in the area was registered in Germany (271415), followed by Ukraine (175678), Romania (111550), Poland (78330), Belarus (75461), Czechia (48306), Moldova (46336) and Austria (37948).

Currently, Montenegro remains the country in the region with the highest rate of cumulative cases per 1 million population (12919 against 4905 in Italy), followed by Moldova (11486), Kosovo (8041), Belarus (7986), North Macedonia (7947), Bosnia-Herzegovina (7587), Romania (5799) and Serbia (4716), while the lowest rate is currently recorded in Latvia (803).

The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Ukraine (379), Romania (275), Poland (100), Moldova (83), Bosnia-Herzegovina (63) and Hungary (50).

In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 were reported in Germany (9386), Romania (4402), Ukraine (3557), Poland (2282), Moldova (1201), Belarus (776), Austria (765), Bulgaria (755), Bosnia-Herzegovina (746) and Serbia (740).

Currently, North Macedonia has the highest rate of deaths per 1 million population in the region (331 against 590 in Italy), followed by Kosovo (325), Moldova (298), Romania (229), Bosnia-Herzegovina (227) and Montenegro (213), while the lowest rate was recorded in Slovakia (7).

In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 258991 confirmed cases and 8805 deaths were registered as of September 20. (ANSA).
