Corruption increased in the past year in CEE, study
COVID-19 pandemic is worsening matters, Transparency said

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 16 - More than 50% of Slovenians, 48%
of Bulgarians, 45% of Romanians and 41% of citizens of Croatia
think corruption increased in the previous twelve months,
according to the new Transparency International's Global
Corruption Barometer, released on Tuesday. At EU level, where
the average percentage is 32%, only Cyprus (65%) had a bigger
share of people stating that corruption increased in 2020, the
study shows. On the opposite side of the scale, Finland (16%),
Estonia (18%) and Slovakia (19%).
"The COVID-19 pandemic is worsening matters. In some countries, politicians use the crisis as an excuse to undermine democracy, while others see it as a chance to make a profit," the study reads. "Whether it's perceptions of government corruption and impunity for wrongdoing, or the use of personal connections when accessing public services, the results challenge the EU's image as a place of integrity," Transparency International said.
