Covid: infections up in Germany, deaths in Poland

But in Central-Eastern Europe cases generally down

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 22 - (by Stefano Giantin) While new cases are generally decreasing in Central- and Eastern Europe, Germany registered a significant increase of infections in the week ending April 18, with Poland recording another massive surge of deaths, according to the latest epidemiological update of the World Health Organization (WHO).

A total of 565,515 new COVID-19 cases -7.6% compared to last week) and 15,391 new deaths (-0.6% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through April 18, bringing the cumulative total deaths to 356,589.

According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Germany (143994), Poland (113394) and Ukraine (93261).

The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Poland (3611), Ukraine (2772), Hungary (1767), Germany (1561), Romania (1066), and Bulgaria (787). In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (79914), Poland (62032), Ukraine (39786), Czechia (28426), Romania (26072), Hungary (25184) and Bulgaria (15138).

Czechia is the country Europe with the highest ratio between deaths and population since weeks, with 266 cumulative deaths per 100,000 population, compared to 196 in Italy. In the region, a high ratio of deaths in comparison with the population is registered also in Hungary (258), Bosnia-Herzegovina (239), Montenegro (228), Bulgaria (218), Slovenia (213) and North Macedonia (212). In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 99,212 new cases in the past week and 76,267 total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic (+3,279 in a week) were registered as of April 18.

According to official data collected by the portal Our World in Data, updated as of April 18, Hungary (with 48.2 doses per 100 people) and Serbia (45.1) are fifth and sixth in Europe respectively for COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people. (ANSA).
