Kosovo: MEPs, dialogue is needed to reduce tensions

After the clash with Serbia: 'Special police to be withdrawn'

28 September, 18:58
(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, SEP 28 - "We are deeply concerned about the recent tensions at the Jarinje and Brnjak border crossings.

Serbia and Kosovo must urgently find a peaceful and sustainable solution to ensure the safety and security of all citizens." That is what's written in a statement issued by the rapporteurs of the European Parliament for Serbia, Vladimir Bilcik, and for Kosovo, Viola von Cramon, and the presidents of the Delegation to the EU-Serbia Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Commission, Tanja Fajon, and of the Delegation for relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, Romeo Franz.

The MEPs called for "the withdrawal of the special police and all army units and the dismantling of checkpoints," as well as an end to "unilateral provocations" and "inflammatory rhetoric, which increase tensions and affect the well-being of local communities." "We call on the EU and its partners to continue working to reduce the escalation of the crisis and urge the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo to use the platform of the EU-facilitated dialogue to resolve all open issues, including those related to freedom of movement," the statement reads. "The normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo is a precondition for both countries' accession to the EU," reiterated the MEPs, who called on the parties to "re-engage actively and constructively in the EU-facilitated dialogue led by the EU Special Representative, in search of a comprehensive, sustainable and legally binding agreement."
