(ANSA) - BELGRADE, OCT 13 - Ten EU countries, mostly from
Central and Eastern Europe, have signed a letter asking the
European Commission "to recognize nuclear power as a low-carbon
energy source that should be part of the Union's transition
towards climate neutrality," the Slovenian news agency STA
reported on Tuesday, quoting information previously made public
from Euronews. The letter, which was initiated by France,
country leader in the EU in the production of energy from
nuclear power, has been supported by Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech
Republic, Finland, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and
Romania, Euronews said.
Nuclear energy, STA reported, is "crucial for energy
independence" and "more countries now realize that," Slovenian
Infrastructure Minister Jernej Vrtovec commented on Twitter,
recalling that plans have been already set in motion for a
future new unit of Slovenia's sole nuclear power plant of Krsko.
