(ANSA) - TIRANA, 04 MAG - An extensive US-led military exercise, 'Defender Europe' 21 ', was launched today, with the participation of 28,000 troops from 26 countries, not just Nato members. The drill, which will continue until June, covers a vast geographical area, from the Balkans to the Baltics, the Black Sea, and North Africa, involving at least 12 countries.

Albania hosts the training commando; on the Albanian coasts, the largest landing in Europe since the Second World War will occur.

"D-Day (the Allied landing in Normandy in June 1944 ed) reminds us of how difficult this test is," said US general Tod Walters, at the helm of the US command in Europe, in his speech at the exercise kick-off ceremony in Durres.

"The goal is to prove our capability in simultaneous operations in different countries, harnessing all our strength against a rival in a simulated high-interest conflict," Walters explained.

Reconfirming the unequivocal alignment of his country alongside Nato and the US, Albanian PM Rama stressed that "Defender Europe '21 could also be useful to send across the whole region, and even beyond, an unequivocal message to those who need answers to their questions on the solidity of our stance within the Alliance."
