(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 29 - Reigning US Open champion Matt
Fitzpatrick said Thursday that Europe will field its top team at
the Ryder Cup in Rome next year.
"For the 2023 Rome Ryder Cup, I think that Team Europe must be
able to count on its 12 best players," the 28-year-old English
golfer told Sky UK.
"Because we have just one goal, victory".
Sheffield born Fitzpatrick, whos US Open win was his first major
victory, said Masters champ Sergio Garcia of Spain would be
welcome in Luke Donald's team and also opened the door to
players on the breakaway Arab Superleague, while admitting
preparations had been hit by the removal of Sweden's Henrik
Stenson as captain after he joined the LIV Golf Tour.
Italian Golf Federation (FIG) Franco Chimenti said last
Wednesday that excitement was already high in Italy for next
year's Ryder Cup in Rome.
The US team is aiming to repeat their win in Wisconsin in 2021
and triumph on European soil for the first time in 30 years at
the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club just outside the Italian
capital. (ANSA).
