(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 14 GEN - The aim of the recommendations published today by the EU, currently investing 160 m euros under the Bulgarian 'Science and education for smart growth' 2014-2020, is to help 14 new research and innovation (R&I) centers in Bulgaria achieve financial sustainability and improve management.

A team of internationally renowned experts developed the guidelines during a year and a half of work, coordinated by the Joint Research Center, and exchanges with colleagues from Spain, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic.

Bulgarian researchers will strengthen the country's R&I system in fields such as sustainability and advanced medicine through the funds mentioned above.

According to EU Commissioner for Cohesion, Elisa Ferreira, "thanks to EU support, these centers will provide scientific infrastructure and equipment, and will thus be attractive to young Bulgarian researchers." The initiative was launched in 2019 and will involve other European countries. From 2021 to 2027, Bulgaria will receive more than ten bn under the cohesion policy, and a substantial part of these funds will support innovation, competitiveness, and green and digital transition.
