01 March, 18:40
(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, 01 MAR - The European Union "looks forward to holding the first intergovernmental conference as soon as possible" to start the accession negotiations with Albania, reads a statement issued at the end of the EU-Albania Stabilization and Association Council attended by the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, and an Albanian delegation led by PM Edi Rama.

Brussels praises "Albania's determination to pursue its reform agenda" demanded by the EU, underlining the "progress made" in several areas. Such as the rule of law, public administration, the judiciary, in particular the process of evaluation ('vetting') of judges and prosecutors, and welcomes the resumption of the functioning of the Constitutional Court and the High Court and the set up of "new specialized bodies for the fight against corruption and organized crime." The EU expects further efforts in the reform of the electoral process. (ANSA).
