Croatia: Mayor of Zagreb died of heart attack

Bandic was elected for six times in a row since 2000

(ANSA) - ZAGREB, 28 FEB - Milan Bandic, the mayor of the Croatian capital Zagreb, has died for a heart attack last night.

He was 66. Bandic, a former social-democrat and one of the most influential politician in the EU country, was at the helm of the city for about 21 years, after being elected for six times in a row, first as a member of the Socialdemocratic party (SDP) and then as independent candidate. Bandic was criticized for his populistic positions and for allegedly being involved in corruption episodes. Municipal elections will be held in May.
