(ANSA) - BOLZANO, MAY 23 - Tourists from Germany and
Switzerland can cross Austria to reach Italy. According to the
website of the Austrian Interior Ministry, travelers can already
cross Austria without stopping. Hermann Gahr, OEVP responsible
for relations with South Tyrol, confirmed this decision. "It is
a fairy tale that Austria prevents German tourists who want to
reach South Tyrol from passing through the country and it was
told for a specific purpose," Gahr told the media. In Germany,
travel abroad is still not recommended until June 14. The
corridor has been in place since the beginning of the
coronavirus crisis, to favor the Germans who wanted to return to
Germany during the lockdown. At the Brenner the Austrian
authorities carried out spot checks to verify that the car's
tank would be sufficiently full to travel the 120 kilometers
that separate the Italian-Austrian crossing from the German
border at Kufstein. Gahr emphasized that Italy still does not
allow the inhabitants of South Tyrol to visit their relatives in
Austrian Tyrol (without quarantine on their return), whereas
this is already possible for those who travel from Tyrol to
South Tyrol. (ANSA).
