Slovenia: first supercomputer 'Vega' launched in Maribor

Only 13 countries with more powerful systems

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 22 - A supercomputer called 'Vega' was launched in the Slovenian city of Maribor on Tuesday, first of a series of eight high-performance computing (HPC) centres planned in the European Union, the Slovenian news agency STA reported. The supercomputer, which costs more than 17 million euro, is located at the Institute of Information Science. Only 13 countries in the world have more powerful supercomputers.

"Supercomputing will enable European small and medium-sized companies to enter the hi-tech economy of the future," European Commission Vice President in charge of digital transition Margrethe Vestager said in an address via video call, STA informed.

In the EU; other seven high-performance computing centres will be located in Bulgaria, Czechia, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal and Spain. (ANSA).
