Covid: in Poland almost 200,000 new cases in a week
Deaths up 10.6 per cent in Central- Eastern Europe

registered almost 200,000 new infections in the week ending
March 28, the highest number in Europe after France, while
Central- and Eastern Europe as a whole recorded a significant
increase in deaths last week, according to the latest
epidemiological update of the World Health Organization (WHO).
According to the WHO epidemiological update, a total of 740,709 new COVID-19 cases +10.1% compared to last week) and 13,057 new deaths (+10.6% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through March 28, bringing the cumulative total of cases to 13,830,985 and of deaths to 311,322.
According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Poland (192441), Germany (112885), Ukraine (97700), Hungary (62265), Czechia (45482), Romania (39331) and Serbia (34721).
The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Poland (2584), Ukraine (2013), Hungary (1710), Czechia (1210) and Germany (1206).
In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (75870), Poland (51884), Ukraine (31954), Czechia (25874), Romania (22997), Hungary (19972) and Bulgaria (12650).
Czechia is the country in the region with the highest ratio between deaths and population since weeks, with 242 cumulative deaths per 100,000 population, compared to 178 in Italy, followed by Slovenia and Hungary (207), Montenegro (198), Bosnia-Herzegovina (191), Bulgaria (182), and North Macedonia (175).
In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 2,911,678 confirmed cumulative cases (+145,295) and 66,185 total deaths (+2,799) were registered as of March 28.
According to official data collected by the portal Our World in Data, updated as of March 28, Serbia (with 34.1 doses per 100 people) is now fourth in Europe for COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people. In Central- and Eastern Europe, the countries that are vaccinating at the fastest pace are Hungary (27.0) and Estonia (19.2), against 15.9 in Italy. (ANSA).
