Greece marks 50th anniversary of anti-junta student revolt

At least 24 people were killed at the Athens Polytechnic

(ANSA-AFP) - ATHENS, NOV 17 - Greece on Friday marks the 50th anniversary of a deadly crackdown on a 1973 student revolt against a US-backed junta, with protests scheduled in main cities later in the day. Held annually, the protests mark the day in 1973 when at least 24 people were killed at the Athens Polytechnic, when the junta sent troops and police against a pro-democracy student uprising. The brutal crackdown shocked Europe, and is generally considered to have broken the dictatorship's grip on power, leading to the restoration of democracy months later. Friday's protests, held in Athens and other major cities, are expected to also focus on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. (ANSA-AFP).
