Citizens spend week aboard with scientists in Mediterranean

08 April, 16:32
(ANSA) - RIMINI, APR 8 - An initiative for "citizen scientists" will start this summer aboard an 18-metre sailboat, the Moana60, coordinated by the Cetacea Foundation in Riccione.

"Sailing for Blue Life" is the name of the scientific research project, in this case aimed at conservation of the marine habitat. It will actively involve citizens who can set sail together with experts on a route in the Mediterranean that will stop at meaningful points from an environmental point of view, such as sea turtle rescue centres, protected marine areas, and nature reserves. The route will travel the Adriatic Sea along the coasts of Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, as well as the Ionian Sea and the coasts of Sicily, Malta, and Tunisia. Conservation and research activities will take place at each stop, and the landings will be accompanied by public events such as the "Sailing for Blue Life Festival", scheduled in Rimini from June 3 to June 8 for World Oceans Day. The journey lasts one week and university students can use it to obtain internship credits.
