The army on Friday donated
disinfectant solutions and saline food supplements to
communities affected by the flood emergency in Emilia Romagna to
stave off the risk of contracting tetanus from contaminated
water.
A delegation from the Florence-based Military Pharmaceutical
Chemical Plant, a production unit of the Defense Industries
Agency (AID), delivered the supplies to the mayor of Monterenzio
in the province of Bologna.
There is concern about the risk to the Emilia Romagna population
in flood-affected areas of bacterial and viral infections in
areas where stagnant water is likely to be contaminated by
sewage effluent, rubbish and animal carcasses.
On Thursday the local health authorities in the province of
Forlì-Cesena announced that it has organized an anti-tetanus
vaccination drive for adults engaged in emergency relief
operations.
People who have not been vaccinated or who had their last
booster more than 10 years ago were invited to access the
service.
